Filipino farmers' group President Rosendo So:

‘Red onions still overpriced despite drop in farmgate cost’

The leader of a farmers' group said yesterday that red onions remain overpriced even as farmgate prices have gone down to between P50 and P60 per kilo. In an interview with Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) President Rosendo So, he said that the prevailing price of onions should be at P100 per kilo.

"The farmgate price of local onions is going down, ranging from P50 to P60 (per kilo). From the farms, if you consider the transport cost, the wholesale price should only be P70 (per kilo) so the problem occurs from the wholesale to retail. The retail price should only be P100 (per kilo)," So noted.

According to So, farmers can still earn as long as the farmgate price of the bulbs will not go down to less than P40 per kilo. The retail price of imported red onions also exceeded the P125 suggested retail price (SRP) issued by the DA as it is pegged as high as P150 per kilo.

[ P100 = €1.70 ]
