Due to rising energy costs, this year's vegetable season in Burgenland is starting 1-2 weeks later. There will be some minor losses due to the later start, but there are not many Austrian farms that have started earlier anyway, paprika grower Lisa Thell from Pamhagen told ORF. Saving energy is currently the top priority, she adds.
For her LGV colleague Daniel Lorenschitz from Wallern, rising energy and personnel costs, as well as the drought, are an issue as well. In the future, they want to focus even more on vegetables adapted to the environment. It is possible that in the future, due to the milder winters, there will be more new varieties that can be grown in Burgenland, the lettuce grower says.
