PCA Administrator Bernie Cruz:

‘Coconut output is falling in the Philippines’

According to the top official of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) coconut production in the Philippines is decreasing, with less than 15 billion of them being harvested annually.

"Unfortunately, it's not going up; it is decreasing annually, although a little," PCA Administrator Bernie Cruz said during the 3rd World Coconut Congress. He added that based on the study the PCA conducted, coconut processors need at least 18 to 20 billion nuts that the current production level cannot supply. "We need to produce more coconut each year. The demand is increasing for the processors," he added.

Based on the data from the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Philippines produced 14.7 million tons of coconuts in 2021, equivalent to 14.7 billion nuts. Cruz said that when it comes to exports of coconut products, the Philippines is still at the top. However, when it comes to production, the Philippines has fallen behind Indonesia, with India following closely.
