This year's exotic season is gradually picking up again at the Karlsruhe wholesale market. "We have been offering Peruvian as well as Brazilian mangoes for about two weeks now, carrying not only the commercially available Kent variety but also, for the first time, the lesser-known Apple variety. The latter variety is slightly more yellow than the Kent and has a very good taste. It is available in all desired calibers, whether boxes of 10, 12 or 13," explains Jürgen Weiler of Rolf Koch GmbH.
Peruvian Nadorcotts and Brazilian flown-in mangos
The Peruvian mangos are usually available from October to May, and in the other months the company offers goods from Israel, among other countries. Says Weiler, "Otherwise, we offer flown-in Papaya Formosa from Brazil in boxes of 5 throughout the year. We have also found a year-round and extremely stable product mainstay in Vietnamese passion fruit. I must also say that we have not felt any great reluctance to buy high-priced items. On the contrary, demand for exotics is actually quite stable."
Price does not play a decisive role either, observes the fruit merchant. "Due to the tight supply situation, we are currently offering eating-ripe Hass avocados at 28 euros/colli and the goods are still selling well." Nevertheless, the wholesale company looks back on a difficult year. "We mainly serve weekly market traders and specialty stores and notice that, especially in the former area, more and more people are quitting for age reasons. In the absence of succession, a significant proportion of these customers ultimately fall away, which in turn is worrying for us, also with a view to the future."

High demand for Peruvian Nadorcotts
Meanwhile, the traditional change of season is now upon us in the citrus sector as well. "They've been offering Peruvian nadorcotts for about six weeks now, and demand has been surprisingly high, especially in the past two weeks, even though the first Spanish early mandarins are already available. However, both in terms of quality and price, the Peruvian product is doing very well, being 20 percent cheaper on sale compared to Spain," concludes Weiler.
