According to data from the Association of Greek fruit and vegetable export companies, imports in Greece saw a significant surge in October, recording a 35.56% increase compared to the same month in 2022.
The overall import of fruits and vegetables in the first ten months of 2023 also rose by 15.97% compared to the same period in the previous year. Greece received a total of 547.34 thousand tons during this period, up from 471.95 thousand tons in 2022.
Imports included potatoes, totalling 191,218 tons in the first ten months of 2023, a 19.2% increase from 2022, with major contributors being Egypt, Cyprus, and France. Bananas amounted to 190,588 tons, a 10.6% increase, with 91.3% originating from Ecuador, followed by Costa Rica and Guatemala.
Other significant imports included onions (25,262 tons, a 284.2% increase), tomatoes (23,508 tons, a 57.2% increase, primarily from Turkey), peppers (4,864 tons, a 12.3% decrease, mainly from the Netherlands), lemons (22,543 tons, a 6.2% decrease, with a significant share from Argentina), apples (8,650 tons, a 5.8% decrease, dominated by Italy).
