Overall, the orange season is going as expected in Egypt. According to Gehan Elsherif, executive manager for Egyptian fresh produce exporter G Fresh for Export & Import, coloring should improve even further after some rain next week: “The orange production has been going well this year, it’s been similar to recent years. The coloring is the same as normal around this time of year. We expect rain to come at the start of next week, which will improve coloring and the brix levels even further. This season, volumes are expected to be higher than the previous season. Sizes are also better than they were last year, we see better development in both big and small sizes of oranges.”
Elsherif states that demand is solid, but competition is fierce, as others have also entered the European markets with their oranges. “Current demand for orange is rather good, the markets need oranges. However, both the Turkish and Greek oranges have also started arriving in the European markets. Looking at Spain, which is a major producer, we heard from our partners that all expectations point to a lower production level than usual.”
When it comes to this year’s prices for Egyptian oranges, we can say they’ll be slightly higher than before. However, we are putting all our effort in maintaining a reasonable price for all of our customers, while still providing the quality that they’ve come to expect from G Fresh. I do expect that the Egyptian orange will be the only one in the market in the midst of the Valencia season until the end of the season,” Elsherif concludes.
