Area of Brazilian fruits and vegetables returned to pre-pandemic levels this year

This season, the area of fruits and vegetables cultivated in Brazil returned to pre-pandemic levels (from 2019). During the pandemic, there was a retraction in the area cultivated. Some sectors, however, increased investments between 2019 and 2023, especially those focused on exports such as mangoes and grapes.

The same occurred for the areas destined for the potato and industrial tomato industry, which have been growing vigorously in recent years. The largest area of industrial potatoes is due to the increase in domestic consumption of pre-fried potatoes and the replacement of imported products with national ones. As for the increase in the industrial tomato area, it is linked to the replacement of imported pulp with national pulp. These movements strengthened the Brazilian industry for these two crops and expanded the area cultivated in the country.

The national fruit and vegetable sector has shown more intense growth in terms of value than in sales volume. And this increase in value is the result of higher production costs and improvements made in the sales and service chain.
