Brazil's fruit farming sector displays resilience and innovation amidst global crop failures

In the face of worldwide crop failures and food security issues due to harsh weather, Brazil emerges as a beacon of resilience and innovation. Ranked third in global fruit production, Brazil is seeing an upswing in its fruit farming sector, demonstrating a unique blend of productivity and innovation. Despite the climate crisis's impact, such as droughts in India and agricultural losses in Italy, Brazil's fruit production thrives, buoyed by a well-supplied grains market from record soy and corn harvests.

The Southeast region of Brazil, renowned for its fertile soil and favorable climate, leads in fruit production, contributing over half of the national yield. However, the Northeast region, despite its lesser contribution, leads in technological advancements. This blend of traditional production and modern technology epitomizes the strength of Brazil's fruit farming sector.

Oranges, bananas, grapes, cocoa and mangoes are the most valuable fruits in Brazil's production. While the domestic market consumes most of these fruits, a growing trend in exports signifies a new era of quality and competitiveness. Brazil exports approximately 40 types of fruits, with mangoes, grapes, melons, lemons, apples, watermelons, and papayas being the top revenue earners in foreign markets.

The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), focusing on research, development, and innovation, plays a crucial role in the fruit farming sector. Embrapa's achievements, such as disease-resistant bananas, new citrus cultivars, and organic fruit farming technologies, address scientific and technological challenges, paving the way for sustainable and efficient fruit farming. Embrapa's future vision includes sustainable intensification, decarbonization, automation, use of biological inputs, implementation of clean and integrated technologies, product safety, and leveraging big data and AI to further enhance the sector.
