In the February edition of Potato Storage Insight's Synopsis bulletin, Adrian Cunnington highlights the UK season's ongoing struggle with adverse weather conditions, notably persistent rainfall, which poses a significant threat to the conventional planting schedules.
In terms of storage, the scarcity of stocks is leading to premature unloading of long-term storage, anticipated to precipitate a supply shortfall in late spring and early summer. Additionally, the delay in transferring seed potatoes to fields presents a storage challenge. "We are picking up on the latter in our technical insight for this month, whilst our best practice update will focus on keeping stores in good shape for the remainder of the season, however long that might be," Cunnington notes.
PSI's recent endeavors include the fully booked Store Managers' Course and participation in a consultation for the proposed National Potato Innovation Centre, attended by 40 delegates in Cambridge. This initiative aims to foster cross-industry collaboration in research and development, vital for the sector's future progression.
