In 2023, Peru exported 18,719 tons of garlic for $32 million. This represented a 13% increase in volume and 34% growth in value compared to the previous year.
This increase in value was due to a notable increase in the price of fresh garlic worldwide. Peruvian garlic was sold at an average of $1.69 per kilo on the international market, i.e. 19% more than in 2022.
The Peruvian garlic was shipped by approximately 60 companies to 17 countries in 2023.
The main destinations were the United States, Mexico, and Ecuador, accounting for 87% of all Peruvian garlic exports. 5,069 tons worth $12 million were shipped to the United States, i.e. 130% more volume and 158% more value than the previous year. Shipments to Mexico amounted to 5,704 tons and were worth US$11 million. Exports to this destination fell by 22% in volume and 14% in value, mainly because many shipments were redirected to the United States. Ecuador imported 5,416 tons of Peruvian garlic for $4 million (+11% in volume and +3% in value).
