The L'Orto di Eleonora summer campaign started at least 10 days early, with retail prices in line with last year at around €1.20-1.40/kg for mini watermelons.

"We started off great, with the limited quantities produced in a protected environment by one of our Sicilian partners. Sales slowed down over the past few days due to the weather in consumption areas in northern Italy, but we are not worried. We are also starting with the harvesting of our top products, i.e. seedless mini watermelons Gavina and Eleonora. They are grown in greenhouses covering around 30 hectares, meaning we can guarantee supplies up until mid-June while we wait for the produce from the open fields to become available," explains Salvatore Lotta, sales manager at O.P. Agricola Campidanese, who also says that a general growth of the Italian crops destined to watermelons has increased by 10% in 2024, with a drop in melons registered with respect to the previous year.

Eleonora is a black mini watermelon with a ruby red flesh, seedless and weighing between 5 and 7 kg, while Gavina is the crunchiest mini watermelon weighing max 2.5 kg. The company's vast catalog also includes Corallo and Majores melons.
"We will commercialize over 100 tons over the next few days, destined mainly to Italian supermarkets. By mid-May, as soon as the quantities will allow it, we will start with shipments in Europe as well. Crops are in excellent condition and in the growing and/or ripening phase. Recent tests confirm the high-quality in terms of color, texture, crunchiness and weight. We are just hoping for the weather to be good so that we can improve and maintain our results," concludes the manager of the Sardinian organization.
