Kissabel apples are gaining attention in Australia's orchards

In Australia's apple orchards, a new brand of apple, Kissabel, is gaining attention for its distinctive red flesh. This brand, rather than a single variety, encompasses apples developed in France over two decades with reduced astringency and enhanced size, texture, and flavor. Kissabel apples are available in two styles: Summer, with yellow skin and a light red interior offering an almost tropical taste, and Berry, characterized by burgundy skin and bold red flesh, described by Rowan Little of Montague Fresh as having a "really deep raspberry, very strong acidity but sweet still, really complex" flavor.

Amidst challenges such as rising production costs and stagnant grower returns, the Australian apple industry is exploring innovative offerings like Kissabel to rejuvenate consumer interest and compete with a diverse range of fruits available year-round. The industry's pursuit of differentiation is exemplified by the introduction of the Cosmic Crisp, a crisp red apple developed over 20 years by Washington State University, combining the desirable traits of Honey Crisp and Enterprise varieties. With its long shelf life and resistance to browning, the Cosmic Crisp represents another effort to capture consumer attention and revitalize the apple market.
