Lidl Italia has opened what it describes as Italy's most eco-friendly supermarket outlet. The new supermarket in Villafranca di Verona, which replaces the existing Lidl store at the same location, was designed and built with sustainability in mind and is completely self-sufficient in terms of energy.

UK supermarket sales set for Euro 2024 fillip, says NIQ
The return of some warm weather in May helped drive sales growth at British supermarkets and they are set for a boost from the upcoming Euro 2024 soccer championship, according to industry data. Market researcher NIQ said sales at UK supermarkets rose 3.3% in the four weeks ending May 18 year-on-year, thanks to a brief period of hot weather in the week ending May 11.

UK: Tesco lasering avocados with product information in test to ditch stickers
Tesco, Britain's biggest supermarket group, is using lasers to etch product information on some of its avocados to avoid using barcoded stickers, in a trial it says will reduce plastic waste. The high-powered lasers remove a minute section of the top layer of avocado skin, leaving a tattoo that shows information for customers and cashiers, such as the size or variety of the fruit.

D.it - Distribuzione Italiana, which operates the Sigma and Sisa supermarkets in Italy, has delivered its best result for five years, with profit at the business doubling in 2023. In 2023, private label sales increased by 11%, while sales of branded products grew by 23%. This led to a total affiliated turnover of €1.07bln. Over the coming year, D.it plans to expand its product portfolio, focusing on strengthening its presence in the fresh food sector, in particular fruits, vegetables, deli, and meat.

Reuters reported: "Spanish retail group Dia has it agreed to sell its business in Brazil for a 'symbolic price' of €100, and exit the country to focus on more profitable markets such as Spain and Argentina. US: Takeoff Technologies files for Chapter 11
Takeoff Technologies filed for Chapter 11 with a plan to seek buyers for some or all of its assets. The grocery e-commerce fulfillment provider is requesting the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware to approve an agreement where a consortium of its customers will provide approximately $9.6mln in debtor-in-possession financing. This financing would allow the company to keep operating while it goes through a marketing and sale process, according to the company.
