At the annual market in Unaiza, Saudi Arabia, 280 tons of dates are traded daily, highlighting the region's significant role in the date industry. The event, located in the Qassim region, features a wide range of dates, including the renowned Sukkari variety.
Prices for these dates can range from 5 riyals for 3 kg to 700 riyals, depending on quality. Auctioneers play a crucial role in the sale of these dates, which are then exported globally. Despite the absence of international visitors last year due to Covid, exports reached around 50 countries. This year, the goal is to expand to 60 countries, with an estimated 20,000 tons of dates being sent overseas. Saudi Arabia, with over 30 million palm trees, produces 1.4 million tons of dates annually. The National Center for Palms and Dates (NCPD) supports this significant agricultural sector.
