Disrupting the national electricity grid and air travel

Nigeria faces indefinite strike from major trade unions

Two prominent trade unions in Nigeria have initiated an indefinite strike, disrupting the national electricity grid and air travel. The action follows the collapse of negotiations with the government regarding a new minimum wage, aimed at mitigating the effects of an inflation rate exceeding 30%. This strike marks the fourth significant action by the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu, who has introduced extensive economic reforms.

Following directives from electricity and aviation unions, workers ceased their services, significantly impacting operations. The Transmission Company of Nigeria reported that union members expelled operators from the nation's power control centers and deactivated several substations, resulting in the national grid's shutdown at 2:19 a.m. local time.
