Collaborating with Guatemala to develop its citrus sector as well

Revitalizing the citrus industry in Belize

The Belizean government is actively working to rejuvenate its citrus sector, which has faced challenges including disease, labor shortages, and increased fertilizer costs since 2008. In 2022, the Briceno Administration provided 15 million dollars in loans to citrus farmers through the Development Finance Corporation, leading to improved production and the introduction of new, successful citrus plant varieties. Further efforts include collaboration with a Guatemalan Technical Delegation to enhance the prospects for Belizean citrus farmers and share knowledge.

Agriculture Minister Jose Mai highlighted the initiative to assist Guatemala in developing its own citrus industry, drawing on Belize's experience with certified nurseries and disease management. Despite the setbacks from citrus greening, Belize has seen a significant increase in citrus production this year. The collaboration also marks the first bilateral meeting with the new Guatemalan government, focusing on shared agricultural challenges and opportunities.
