Vietnam works to ensure the promotion of fruit exports through increased food safety measures

To ensure the promotion of fruit exports, adhering to phytosanitary requirements and food safety measures is essential, as highlighted by industry experts. Fresh fruits including durian, longan, lychee, mango, dragon fruit, coconut, banana, pineapple, and passion fruit are gaining preference in international markets such as China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the US, and the European Union. It is noted that these markets demand cultivation in certified areas and processing in approved facilities before packaging, with China being a prime example.

Exporters are required to comply with the General Administration of Customs (GAC)'s Decree 248 and Decree 249, which pertain to the registration of overseas manufacturers of imported food and the safety administration of imported and exported food, respectively, as stated by Ngo Xuan Nam, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sanitary and Phytosanitary Notification Authority and Enquiry Point. These decrees have been in effect since January 2022. The European Union, in particular, imposes strict traceability and product quality standards, with an emphasis on food safety. The European Commission updates maximum pesticide residue levels for fresh and frozen fruits regularly.

Thanh Ha lychees from Hai Duong province exemplify a Vietnamese fruit that has penetrated high-end markets including China, Japan, France, the US, the Republic of Korea, and Malaysia due to its quality. In terms of pricing, Vietnamese lychee in Australia fetched significantly higher prices compared to the domestic market last year. This year, Thanh Ha lychees continue to command high prices in Australia.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasizes the importance of assigning growing area and packaging facility codes to align production with market demands and elevate the reputation of Vietnamese agricultural products. Currently, 56 localities have been granted codes for products destined for China, the US, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and the EU.
