Redes advocates for strategic agricultural improvements

Peru focuses on the historical and economic significance of the humble potato

As Peru commemorates International Potato Day, the focus is on the tuber's historical and economic significance, amidst a decline in production due to climatic adversity and pest attacks. The Red de Estudios para el Desarrollo (Redes) has called attention to these issues, advocating for strategic agricultural improvements. Originating from the Andean region, the potato is a cornerstone of Peruvian culture and economy. Despite a 10% reduction in production in 2023, dropping to 5.4 million tons from the previous year's 6 million tons, the country remains a major producer in Latin America.

Climate phenomena and pests, particularly the Papakura worm, have been identified as primary factors behind the reduced yields. Redes reports that 64% of Peru's potato crops are rainfed, making them vulnerable to drought conditions. The department of Puno was notably affected, with production decreasing significantly. The economic impact of these declines on farming families and the broader food industry has been substantial.

Comparatively, Peru's potato yield is lower than that of neighboring countries, prompting calls for improved farming practices, pest management, and the use of genetically enhanced seeds. International Potato Day serves as a reminder of the crop's global importance and Peru's role in its cultivation and preservation.
