Plum harvest thrives in Kanthalloor, India

This year, Kanthalloor has experienced a significant plum harvest due to the absence of summer rains, positioning it as a key location for farm tourism. The favorable weather conditions have led to a successful transition of all flowers into fruit, increasing yields.

Plum cultivation is concentrated in villages like Guhanathapuram, Perumala, Puthur, and Keezhanthoor, with the Victoria plum variety being particularly popular for its taste among both locals and tourists. The harvest, usually starting in early May, began in early June this year. Prices for plums have reached up to Rs 150 per kg in local markets, with tourist areas such as Marayoor seeing even higher prices. A well-maintained plum tree can produce 50 to 70 kilograms of fruit, with each fruit weighing between 30 to 50 grams.

Kanthalloor, known for its diverse fruit cultivation including apples, guavas, pomegranates, strawberries, and garlic, offers a rich experience for tourists with attractions like Pattissery Dam, Kulachivayal Rocks, and Keezhanthoor Falls. Located at 1,525 meters above sea level, the area is a hub for nature enthusiasts and is close to other tourist destinations like Munnar and Vattavada.
