Penny Reidy - SA Produce Market

“We are seeing more varieties of mandarins – the imperial and more navels, Cara Cara has just started"

The start of the South Australia citrus season was marked in style at the South Australia Produce Market last month. Minister Clare Scriven, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, was there to cut the orange ribbon.

The citrus season kicked off in May in South Australia. The early Navel oranges were the first variety to arrive, followed closely by the Satsuma Mandarin.

"We are now seeing more varieties of mandarins – the imperial and more navels with the Cara Cara just started," said Penny Reidy, Marketing, BD & Communications Manager, South Australian Produce Market

"We have had relatively normal seasons of weather leading into the picking season, which has been warm days and cooler nights. This is what the fruit needs for brightly coloured skin and sweet taste. The growers have been really pleased with the crops as they are being picked this season so far."

The produce market's CEO, Angelo Demasi, said: "Witnessing the arrival of a fresh variety of locally grown fruit in the wholesale market is always exciting, marking the shift of seasons and introducing a new array of local produce for consumers to savour."

"Citrus has a gross revenue value of some $388 million per annum in South Australia. The industry is a major contributor to the local economy, with an anticipated 200,000 tonnes to be picked this season."
