Citrus growers call for feedback on proposed export rules

The Citrus Growers Association (CGA) is seeking feedback on proposed rules for exporting citrus fruits, including registration, record-keeping, and fees. These measures aim to maintain industry competitiveness and accurate market data. Comments are due by Friday, 21 June 2024.

On 9 May, the CGA requested that the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development extend these rules under the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act (MAP Act) 1996. Without renewal, current rules will end on 31 December 2024.

CGA CEO Justin Chadwick emphasized that registration and data collection are crucial for accurate market information and levy collection, which support industry management. Proposed levies for citrus fruits per 15kg carton are: R1.79 (2024), R1.65 (2025), R1.67 (2026), R1.70 (2027), and R1.76 (2028). These levies are well within the MAP Act's 5% limit.

Directly affected groups should submit comments to the NAMC at [email protected] by 21 June 2024.
