Bac Giang province in Vietnam faced a notable decrease in litchi production this year, with the overall yield reaching merely 42.5% of the previous year's output. The province harvested 86,000 tons, falling short of the anticipated 100,000 tons. This decline was attributed to unfavourable weather conditions, including a warmer winter with late cold spells, adversely affecting the litchi flowering process.
Despite this, the scarcity of litchis led to an unprecedented increase in market prices, peaking at VND55,000-110,000 per kilogram. Consequently, Bac Giang farmers experienced record revenues from litchi sales, totalling VND4.8 trillion. The domestic market absorbed 61,000 tons, while exports accounted for 24,800 tons, with China remaining the largest importer. Additionally, the European Union and Dubai markets showed a significant uptick in demand. The total revenue from litchis and related services amounted to VND5.775 trillion, marking the highest ever in the region's history, despite a reduction in total yield.
