China Week 26 Fruit Wholesale Market Report

Prices of imported citrus rebounded slightly, apples slow to sell

Imported citrus prices have rebounded. South African grapefruit is currently sold at about ¥120-¥130 per piece, which is about 10%-20% higher than the price in the last two weeks. Traders have noted that the grapefruit market hit its lowest point in the previous fortnight.

South African sweet orange prices have also risen slightly. Currently, higher-quality batches are sold at about ¥160-¥180 per piece, with the proportion of this grade increasing recently; lower-quality batches are sold at about ¥130 per piece, consistent with last week. Compared to the price of over ¥200 per piece during the early production season last year, this year's early market is lower. Merchants report that the peel color of the sweet oranges that have arrived is lighter, and the taste is not yet optimal. They estimate that in about ten days, the ripeness of the sweet oranges will improve, potentially enhancing arrival conditions and prices.

The price of Australian oranges has risen slightly, and the quality remains stable. It is understood that the current market for imported tangerines is relatively favorable, primarily due to limited arrival volumes.

The price of imported apples is stable, but sales volume and speed are not as ideal. Merchants mentioned that the market for New Zealand apples, particularly Gala apples, is higher than last year. The price of ¥310 per piece during the same period in previous years has reached the peak for Gala apples. This year, due to limited arrival volumes, the price has been maintained at ¥320-¥330 per piece for a long time. The current market performance of South African apples is not as strong as in the previous two years. Merchants report that while the quality of arrivals is good and the price of high-quality sources is similar to previous years, overall market demand is low, and sales are slow, especially for Fuji apples. The market for Chilean apples is also poor.

Left: Peruvian avocados; Right: Thai Monthong durians.

The price of imported avocados continues to fall, with selling prices ranging from ¥55-¥80/piece.

The market and sales volume of durians increased in the past few days, with prices remaining firm. Recently, however, sales volume has declined. The market is currently dominated by Thai Monthong durians, with A6-grade prices ranging from ¥720-¥820 per piece, and prices concentrated at ¥750-¥780 per piece, about 10%-15% higher than two weeks ago.

The arrival of young coconuts from Thailand continues to increase, with large fruits currently sold at about ¥95 per piece. Although still higher than the same period in the past, the price has been falling weekly.

Left: Honey plums and flat peaches produced in China; Right: Yellow peaches.

Currently, peaches and plums are the main fruits produced in China. The supply of honey plums has been increasing, with the Brix gradually rising. Merchants reported that a newly launched flat peach variety sold quickly initially due to limited supply. Recently, the arrival volume and the number of sellers have increased rapidly, slowing sales. At present, the aroma and hardness are good. Merchants selling honey peaches noted that increased supply and competition among sellers have caused prices to drop.
