Expert analysis of why Azerbaijan increased tomato imports

Azerbaijan has significantly increased its tomato purchases from Turkmenistan. Currently, the price of tomatoes in stores ranges from $0.88 to $1.77 per kilogram. From January to April 2024, Azerbaijan imported 548 tons of tomatoes from Turkmenistan, amounting to $304,900. During this period, the import price of 1 kilogram of tomatoes from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan was $0.56.

Discussing the impact of export and import on domestic market prices, economist-expert Khalid Kerimli stated that entrepreneurs compare the revenue obtained from external and internal markets. "If they earn more in the external market, they do not bring the product to the domestic market," he noted.

Azerbaijan itself is a major exporter of tomatoes, exporting large volumes abroad. The export price of 1 kilogram of tomatoes sold abroad was $1.36. The expert points out that in the presence of exports, prices naturally rise. Consequently, the volume of products in the domestic market decreases.
