Permanent shipping route from Tuticorin to Addu inaugurated by Maldives Ports Limited

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has initiated a new shipping route from Tuticorin, India, to Addu, aiming to facilitate the steady transport of fruits, vegetables, and other staples such as onions, potatoes, and eggs. MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim informed that the inaugural shipment, carrying 150 tonnes of goods, is scheduled to dock at Hithadhoo Port. The plan, developed in collaboration with Finesse, an Indian import company, envisages dispatching a cargo ship to Addu every 10 to 15 days, contingent upon demand from Addu atoll and Fuvahmulah.

In discussions with local business entities, Wajeeh emphasized the potential for this initiative to reduce the cost of fruits and vegetables in Addu, aligning with the priorities of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The sustainability of this service, according to Wajeeh, hinges on ensuring security and fostering sufficient demand to economically justify each shipment, which can carry up to 300 tonnes of goods. Efforts will be concentrated on engaging the Addu community and businesses to support and maximize the utilization of this shipping route.
