"Cherry season was generally good for growers and traders"

Not every Greek cherry trader has had a bad time due to the weather conditions. According to Apostolos Tsinoglou, owner of the Greek fruit exporter Europe Export, they've actually had a pretty good season: "For this year's cherry season, it was generally a good year for both growers and fruit traders. Yes, there were definitely challenges in terms of both weather as well as lower volumes, but we were able to make the most of the situation presented to us."

Tsinoglou states that the hail also damaged the trees in the mountains and caused volumes to drop for this season's cherries. "About 15 to 20 days ago, Greece endured hail in certain areas and this did indeed affect us. It also caused serious damage to the trees in the mountains. As for the quantity, this year it was 30% less than the last year, but the fruit sizes were bigger than last year."

The lower availability of Greek cherries meant that prices have shot up since the start of the season: "Overall, these factors resulted in increased prices for the cherries. These cherry prices started from 2.3 euro to 3.3 euro per kilogram for the producers. By now, at the end of the season, these prices have short up starting from 3.2 euro to even 3.8 euro per kilogram," Tsinoglou concludes.
