Kazakhstan achieves highest potato export volume in a decade

Kazakhstan has exported the largest volume of potatoes in the past decade, with Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan being the primary importers.

According to DATA HUB, citing statistical data, Kazakhstani suppliers sold $31.7 million worth of potatoes abroad in the first five months of this year, nearly four times more than in the same period in 2023. This figure marks the highest for this period in at least a decade.

In terms of weight, this year's export also set a ten-year record, although the growth was more modest: 294,000 tons in the first five months compared to 108,000 tons in 2023. The average price of exported potatoes has significantly increased due to the export of seed potatoes. This year, the average price reached $644 per ton, seven times higher than a year ago. The majority of seed potatoes were exported to Turkmenistan.

However, there is no recent data available on potato sales in the domestic market. We can estimate the population's potato consumption based on earlier data: in the first quarter, the per capita consumption was 3.8 kilograms per month, excluding food service sectors.
