In search of enhanced profitability, Ukrainian farmers are diversifying their agricultural practices, notably through the cultivation of melons. This shift is observed in the Kropyvnytskyi district, Kirovohrad region, where Hennadiy Taktarov, alongside 13 other farms, ventured into watermelon and melon cultivation on an expanded acreage of approximately 7,500 acres. This development is noteworthy given the region's unconventional climate for such crops.
Taktarov, transitioning from sunflower to melon cultivation due to market challenges and geopolitical issues affecting traditional melon-growing areas, highlights the intensive care required for these crops, including manual harvesting and local labour engagement. Experimentation with various cultivars and cultivation techniques has been pivotal, adapting to the Kirovohrad region's less favourable climatic conditions compared to Ukraine's southern regions. Despite these challenges, favourable weather conditions this year facilitated an expedited ripening process for watermelons and melons.
Looking ahead, Taktarov plans to leverage this year's insights for future cultivation, emphasizing the strategic shift towards vegetable and melon farming as a response to current agricultural challenges.
