"Our cherry production is between ten and fifteen per cent higher this season"

After a positive apple season, the cherry season has also not disappointed, says Subatay Tirman, General Manager Assistant of Turkish fresh produce exporter Darya Nature: "Looking back at our previous apple season, we had a really good season. We're currently still in our cherry season, which is going great so far! For the cherries, there were some problems in general for other farms. However, our farms are built at 1700 meters in altitude, which has resulted in very good quality in this year's cherries. We actually have the orchard that is harvesting the latest in Turkey."

According to Tirman, their cherries are mostly sent to supermarkets and wholesalers, directly. "Demand for cherries is already strong, but given the high quality of our harvest, we're in the midst of some very busy weeks. The fact that our production is between ten and fifteen per cent higher this season, helps out a lot as well. Our cherries are mostly sent directly to supermarkets and wholesalers, and we've had more than enough volumes available for the orders we're receiving."

Tirman expects the production to increase even further in the next season, as investments made in the past will come into play: "We've made some investments about three to four years ago, and we'll be reaping the benefits of those investments in the next season, as orchards are maturing. For our plans, we intend to have between 25 and 30 per cent more volumes of cherries in the next season."

Darya Nature will have a stand in Hong Kong, in the hopes to find buyers for one of their specific products: "We'll be exhibiting during Asia Fruit Logistica this year. For us, it's a great opportunity to meet new contacts, especially for our apple trade. We invite everyone to come meet us and look at what we can do for you. You can find out stand at 5H37," he concludes.
