According to the first estimates, the region of Murcia will produce more than 178,000 tons of watermelon in 2,775 hectares this season, i.e. 21.85% more watermelon than in the previous season.
"Watermelon is one of the region of Murcia's most outstanding crops, especially in summer. It's well-recognized and demanded at the national level and in international markets, mainly in Germany," stated Sara Rubira, the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, during a visit to the facilities of the Alimer Cooperative in Lorca.
"The region's watermelon is more resistant and better prepared for the current climatic situation. It is highly demanded because of its excellent flavor and texture, which differentiates it from other regions' products," she added.
The sector expects production to stand at 178,410 tons, 166,110 tons of which will be of seedless watermelons and the remaining 12,300 tons of watermelons with seeds. Similarly, white watermelon predominates over black watermelon. This fruit is grown outdoors on 2,688 hectares and in greenhouses on 87 hectares.
Second-biggest watermelon exporting province
In 2023, the region of Murcia reaffirmed itself as the country's second-biggest watermelon exporting province with a 16.66% increase in sales abroad over the 2022 campaign. Regional exports account for 18.7% of the crop's value and 18.45% of the national production volume.
Specifically, the sales volume rose to 93 million euros. The main buyers are Germany -where the Region of Murcia sends a third of its production-, the United Kingdom, and France.
