Expansion in California ahead on organic veg and citrus

Organic leafy greens, organic red leaf, romaine, and green leaf lettuce are all seeing steady supply out of Hollister and Salinas, California right now. Production will stay there until October when it transitions to Capay, California, and that region will include a few new commodities for Creekside Organics, Inc. "This will also be our first season of having organic romaine hearts and they will start in October," says Ashley Berlinger, business development manager/sales representative with Creekside Organics. "Barring any weather events and with how abundant it's been, I do see a smooth transition ahead."

Production on the company's organic leafy greens will stay in Hollister and Salinas, California until October when it transitions to Capay, California.

Come fall, demand should also strengthen for leafy greens when school is back in session and consumers eat more often at home. Berlinger adds that romaine lettuce, which is seeing good yield right now particularly, also tends to increase in demand starting in September, and that could strengthen pricing at that point.

The company's organic melons will also finish in September.

More organic veg in the Imperial Valley
Organic romaine hearts aren't the only new item for Creekside Organics this fall. "Once the Imperial Valley season starts, which is November, we'll have iceberg, spinach, romanesco, Brussel sprouts, leeks and green onions–spinach, iceberg, and green onions are all new additions for us," Berlinger says. "We're excited to have more of a full lineup. We've been growing our retail business since Capay and Creekside Organic merged in 2021."

Berlinger says the company will also start again this fall with domestic citrus.

The company will also be starting with domestic citrus again in the fall. "I am hearing that there's going to be a two to three-week gap between Valencia oranges and navels oranges in the fall on organic citrus," says Berlinger. "We are planning to have our same organic domestic citrus program this season starting with Satsumas and then we'll go into the clementines, Tangos, and Murcotts. The entire Mandarin program will be about 30,000 boxes this season."

Expansion for the company is also happening in the citrus category when it will be introducing organic Cara Caras and blood oranges in 2025.
