The Proarándanos Board of Directors, central to the Peruvian blueberry sector, underwent a consensus-based renewal. Miguel Bentín, of Family Farms Peru, retains the presidency, with Álvaro Carrasco from Camposol continuing as vice president. Juan José Gal L. of Agrovisión Perú steps in as treasurer, and Roberto Vargas from Agrícola Santa Azul takes on the secretary role.
The board includes Ximena Rossello from Greenway, Gabriel Noboa of Agrícola Don Ricardo, Daniel Bustamante from Agrícola Cerro Prieto, José Antonio Castro of the Drokasa Agricultural Society, and Francisco Vizquerra from Hortifrut Perú.
Miguel Bentín underscored the organized inception of the Peruvian blueberry industry, emphasizing market access and the creation of collaborative technical spaces as initial focuses. He noted the industry's growth from 2,800 tons in 2014 to 10,400 tons in the 2015/2016 campaign, marking a 270% increase. Bentín anticipates this growth trend could persist for at least another five years.
Highlighting the Peruvian blueberry industry's comparative advantages, Bentín pointed to the year-round production capability, ensuring a steady supply and allowing for more efficient and competitive production. He also mentioned the potential for segmenting agricultural management to target specific production times throughout the year. Additionally, he praised the consistent and extended post-harvest life of Peruvian blueberries, noting minimal issues with maritime shipments.
