Update on Varroa Mite in Victoria, Australia

Agriculture Victoria has confirmed the first detection of Varroa mite in Victoria at a property in Nangiloc, near Mildura. This discovery was made during Agriculture Victoria's routine surveillance activities, which are conducted annually during the almond pollination season.

In alignment with the National Varroa Mite Response Plan, Agriculture Victoria is collaborating closely with beekeepers and orchardists to minimise the impact on beehives and almond pollination. While the risk of spread will be carefully managed, it is important to note that there will be no efforts to eradicate Varroa in Victoria at this time.

To support our beekeeping community, Varroa Development Officers have been appointed in Victoria under the National Response Plan. These experts are available to provide direct guidance to beekeepers on managing Varroa mite and effectively utilising the available chemical control options.
