Ricardo García Salas, General Manager of Agro Export Pacific S.A, Panama

Greater volumes and new markets for Panamanian watermelon exports to Europe

Agro Export Pacific S.A., based in the province of Herrera, Republic of Panama, has established itself as a leading exporter of watermelons to Europe. Under the helm of General Manager Ricardo García Salas, the company has been growing steadily since it was founded in 2010 and has specialized in the production of different watermelon varieties, including seedless watermelon, mini watermelon and other ultra-firm varieties.

According to García Salas, the company exports 100% of its production to Europe, with 70% going to the United Kingdom and 30% to the Netherlands. This year, Agro Export Pacific S.A. expects significant growth in its export volumes, which will increase from 239 to 270 containers. This represents a positive trend compared to previous years.

"This growth shows our commitment to quality and production efficiency," says Garcia Salas. "Our exporting period is relatively short, just eight to ten weeks, and runs from early February to mid-April. Therefore, we are forced to work with extreme accuracy in our production and logistical processes."

One of Agro Export Pacific S.A.'s main advantages over its competitors, such as Costa Rica, is its privileged access to both Atlantic and Pacific ports thanks to the Panama Canal. "This allows us to offer greater flexibility and speed in the shipment of our products to Europe," says García Salas.

Quality is a fundamental aspect for the company. According to its General Manager, "the fruit's quality goes all the way back to the moment the seed is put in the ground." This rigorous approach applies to the entire process, from harvesting to transport. The goal is to ensure that the watermelons arrive to European supermarkets in perfect condition. Also, Agro Export Pacific S.A. holds certifications from GlobalG.AP., Tesco Nurture, and SMETA, and is in the process of obtaining the LEAF certification, which shows its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

The European market has become increasingly demanding in terms of certifications and quality standards, and Agro Export Pacific S.A. remains at the forefront. "Meeting the requirements of these certifications not only guarantees we'll be able to stay in the market, but also to continue growing and offering high quality products," says García Salas.

García Salas also says that the impact of pests and the weather conditions are the most important challenges in watermelon production; however, the company feels confident in its ability to overcome these difficulties, given its focus on technological innovation and agronomic management.

Looking to the future, Agro Export Pacific S.A. is also exploring new markets, such as the United States, and looking to expand its presence in other European countries. "Our participation in international fairs is not only allowing us to look for new clients, but also to keep abreast of the latest innovations in machinery, packaging and agricultural technology," says García Salas.

Agro Export Pacific S.A. will participate in the next edition of Fruit Attraction in Madrid, which will take place from October 8 to 10. The company has already been attending this fair for several years and this year will be no exception. A fundamental aspect behind this participation is the support they receive from ProPanama. García Salas says that ProPanamá is a crucial ally in the growth of the country's export activity,

Lastly, García Salas highlighted the positive impact that the company is having on the local economy, generating employment and contributing to the development of the region. "We are motivated by knowing that our efforts are not only beneficial for our consumers in Europe, but also for the communities in Panama," he says.
