The Royal Gala apple harvest is coming to an end in the Spanish province of Girona and the Golden variety will start to be harvested in around 8 days. Production volumes are expected to recover from last season's drop and, for the time being, sales are underway with stable prices.
"The new apple season has started with very similar prices to those recorded at the same time last year, although it is worth noting that the processing industry is bidding hard for apples and is causing prices to rise, which could have an influence on the fresh market," says Alex Creixell, Giropoma's Managing Director.
"For the time being, stability reigns in the market and it remains to be seen how the lower production forecast in other European producing countries will affect Spanish apples. Spain resorts to apple imports every year, and this year it will be a more expensive product," says Creixell.
"Apple prices are high and, if they continued to rise, consumption could suffer," says the Managing Director of Giropoma. "Nonetheless, everything points to this being a stable season with few price fluctuations," he says.
