The bulk of Ghanaian yams harvested this August

Fresh yams from Ghana now available

Yam is a tropical tuber similar to sweet potatoes, grown and exported on a massive scale from West African countries. Worldwide production is dominated by Nigeria (70%) while Ghana produces 10%. However, the world's biggest exporter of this commodity crop is Ghana.

Felix Kamassah, CEO of Maphlix Trust Ghana, comments: "Yam is one of Ghana's leading agricultural exports. Our yam is valued in the market thanks to its quality and consistency, and our greater ability to meet import standards of our markets, especially with regard to certifications and packaging."

"Ghanaian yam is exported to three main countries, namely the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the USA," continues Kamassah. "We expect the same trends for the season that has just begun."

"The Ghanaian yam season has just begun, in August," adds the grower. "Seasons vary by region, but the bulk of volumes is harvested in August, after a planting period between November and April."

As for volumes, over 800 thousand tons of Yam from Ghana are exported annually. Kamassah adds: "At Maphlix Trust Ghana, we are one of the main exporters behind 200 thousand tons of exported volumes per year. Our production and export capacity has just increased considerably, with a 20% increase in acreage over the previous year."

"In addition to Yam, we also grow other products such as okra, green beans, tomatoes and orange flesh sweet potatoes," concludes Kamassah.
