"We want to prove that 1+1 free does not mean inferior quality”

At the Intermarché store of Gerpinnes, Belgium, a display featuring seasonal fruit such as melons and grapes is displayed right at the entrance of the store. Such operations are part of the shop's daily routine. "At least once a week, our team tries to create a display that is eye-catching, makes customers smile, compliments the staff and boosts sales," explains Quentin Jumet, fruit and vegetable manager.

Intermarché of Gerpinnes

High demand for melons over the summer
There are several reasons why melons were the star of the fruit and vegetable section from August 27th to September 1st. "Our supplier Jacques Remy brought superb French melons of high quality. It is very important for our customers to see that 1+1 free does not mean inferior quality. Additionally, in our store, promotional actions start on Tuesdays. Last week went well, with sunshine and the start of the new school year. There is nothing like seasonal fruit for a school snack. At this time of year, it is probably one of the last days melons can be enjoyed as a seasonal produce. Melons have been very good this year, both in terms of supply and taste. We had a great summer and the demand was high.

Focus on local produce and the Belgian origin
In the Belgian shop, it is the Belgian origin that takes priority when it is available. "We often try to put Belgian products forward, as customers are increasingly looking for local produce. When it is not possible, we like to offer French products too, because customers have a bad image of Spanish supply, which they often associate with excessive use of phytosanitary products."

Good publicity for the store
Quentin Jumet is no stranger to store displays. "On several occasions, we have noticed that customers were taking photos of our displays. This can be great publicity for us, as they are likely to share them on social media or directly with their acquaintances. We really have everything to gain by showcasing our facilities. I would like to encourage the staff in each fruit and vegetable department to put on great fruit and vegetable displays."
