The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has expressed its intention to bolster Bangladesh's mango export efforts. This initiative, part of the 'One Country One Priority Product' (OCOP) program, seeks to refine production systems and reduce food loss while fostering more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. "FAO will help Bangladesh to export its different seasonal fruits including mango through their 'One Country One Priority Product' (OCOP) aiming to optimize the production systems, minimize food loss and more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems", stated FAO representative Dr Jiaoqun Shi during a meeting in Dhaka.
The OCOP program, initiated in 2021, is designed to assist nations in identifying and promoting Special Agricultural Products (SAPs) with unique qualities for integration into various markets. The dialogue between FAO and Bangladesh also covered agricultural damages from recent floods and the need for technical and consulting support to enhance agricultural development and diversify exports.
At the onset of the meeting, Agriculture Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury acknowledged FAO's ongoing support and expressed hope for its continuation, especially in light of the agricultural setbacks caused by flooding in 11 out of 23 districts. "FAO support is necessary during the next agricultural rehabilitation programme," he emphasized. FAO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh's agricultural sector through advancements in seed technology and technical consultation.
