Ukraine experiences 16 percent rise in onion prices

Analysts from the EastFruit project have noted an uptick in onion prices in Ukraine's market from the start of the week. The surge in prices is linked to the inclement weather, particularly heavy rains in the country's southern regions, disrupting the harvesting process. This disruption has led to a diminished supply and an elevation in onion prices. Currently, the price range for onions is reported to be between 10-15 UAH/kg ($0.24-0.36/kg), marking an average increase of 16% from the previous week. The escalation in prices is also driven by a heightened demand from wholesale entities.

The adverse weather conditions have not only impeded the harvest but are also anticipated to affect the quality of the onions still in the fields. Despite these challenges, the majority of high-quality onions are being hoarded by farmers, who are opting to sell only in limited quantities. Furthermore, data from the EastFruit project's daily monitoring reveals that the current average price of onions in Ukraine aligns closely with the figures from the previous year.
