Tasmania's strong potato harvest ensures chip availability

Tasmania's agribusiness landscape has encountered diverse outcomes across its sectors, as detailed in the fourth annual Agribusiness Insights Report. The report indicates that the fruit and wine sectors have seen favorable results, attributed to irrigation efforts that counteracted dry spells. Despite these adversities, Tasmanian slaughter figures have risen, propelled by increased livestock sales and persistent aridity.

Field crops and vegetables reported steady yields and quality, with potato cultivation notably thriving. Dry autumn weather facilitated efficient harvesting and minimized disease in potatoes, leading to an abundant supply of chips and no forecasted shortages.

Jane Howlett, Minister for Primary Industries and Water, emphasized the report's reflection of the sector's resilience and adaptation capabilities. She remarked on the global recognition of Tasmania's premium produce and the high confidence levels among Tasmanian farmers.
