Figs join Plaisirs du Verger organic brand (ProNatura)

"Fig volumes should increase steadily over the next few years”

The ProNatura and Organic Alliance brand, Plaisirs du Verger®, created in 2022 in partnership with 6 producers in the Rhône Valley, is expanding to include figs. Available from mid-August to mid-October and intended for the fresh market, they are produced in the Bouches-du-Rhône region.

Plaisir du Verger® figs are sold by ProNatura mainly to specialized organic shops.

Organic figs made in Bouches-du-Rhône
"The figs in our range are produced by three growers of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, who have been working in partnership with ProNatura for several years. In 2024, we are counting on an estimated campaign volume of 40 tons, but volumes are set to increase steadily over the next few years." Varieties offered under the Plaisirs du Verger® brand include the Bourjassotte, Longue d'Août and Noire de Caromb.

According to the PACA Chamber of Agriculture, France is Europe's 4th largest fig producer, with 7,186 tons in 2023, well behind Spain (25,000 tons), Italy and Greece. The Var department, and more specifically the Gapeau valley, accounts for 80% of the national production, followed by the Bouches du Rhône, Vaucluse, Alpes-Maritimes, Languedoc-Roussillon and the Rhône valley, as well as a number of smaller production areas.

"Guaranteeing figs that meet these expectations is very important for the development of this French sector"
"The figs found on supermarket shelves present great variations in terms of taste quality, because there are many differences between the varieties, as well as between the practices of their growers. Yet, it is an expensive product to buy for a treat. Disappointing products can quickly have a negative impact on sales. Guaranteeing figs that meet these expectations is therefore very important in order to develop this French organic sector. Through its Plaisir du Verger® range, ProNatura is offering a selection of varieties with great flavor potential, harvested just at the right time, grown with limited water input, and on favorable terroirs."
