A prominent mushroom farm located in Monterey County's Prunedale is set to close, leading to the termination of several hundred positions. The impending closure of the Monterey County site, which will result in the loss of 605 jobs, was communicated through a WARN letter to the state's Employment Development Department. Monterey Mushrooms described the move as strategic, aimed at addressing the less competitive nature of the Royal Oaks site due to its size and the complexity of its operations. The company has decided against investing in the aging infrastructure of the Royal Oaks farm, opting instead to focus on enhancing its remaining facilities.
In light of the shutdown, Monterey Mushrooms, headquartered in Watsonville, is initiating several measures to strengthen its operations. The company plans to invest in its four other farms to improve efficiency, sustainability, and biotech capabilities. This includes a significant financial commitment to upgrades and the pursuit of key industry partnerships, with further details to be announced. The job cuts are scheduled to take effect around December 9, as per the WARN letter. Monterey Mushrooms has expressed its appreciation for the support from its retail and food service partners and reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a significant presence in the mushroom sector.
