Mekong Delta in Vietnam enhances fruit branding for exports

The Mekong Delta, recognized as Vietnam's premier fruit export hub, is intensifying efforts to establish concentrated and specialized cultivation zones to fulfill international trade requirements. With 370,000 hectares dedicated to fruit farming, the region is prioritizing high-profit fruits for branding initiatives.

In Can Tho city, the Trang Ti Garden Fruit Production Cooperative, encompassing 70 hectares of longan orchards, is advancing towards meeting the stringent standards of the US and Australian markets. Cooperative member Tran Phuoc Son emphasized the importance of adhering to cultivation standards to ensure market access. "We pay close attention to quality. Once our products are qualified, we'll no longer have to worry about the market. We've set up models that follow the VietGap standards. There is no way to compete other than to abide by the standards set by demanding markets," Son remarked.

Efforts are being made to invest in specialized cultivation areas and sustainable farming practices while fostering connections with businesses for stable product outlets. According to Tran Thai Nghiem, Deputy Director of Can Tho city's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, there is a growing interest in linking with fruit distributors. This collaboration aims at sharing resources to cater to export demands, particularly for high-profit fruits like durian, star apple, and longan.

Le Thanh Tung from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development highlighted the strategic formation of specialized cultivation areas to bridge farmers and businesses for both domestic and international sales. Innovative practices, such as inducing off-season fruit production, have positioned the Mekong Delta as a leader in Southeast Asia, contributing significantly to the region's export figures. Vietnam's fruits now reach over 60 global markets, with notable brand establishment in China, the US, Australia, the EU, Japan, and South Korea.

China's Ministry of Commerce spokesperson, He Yadong, acknowledged the popularity of Vietnamese fruits among Chinese consumers, noting that Vietnam's agricultural imports constitute a significant portion of China's total agricultural product imports. The successful export of fruit shipments to demanding markets underscores the Mekong Delta's adaptation to international standards, with ongoing efforts to attract investment for value-added processing.
