Vélez-Málaga tackles mango and avocado theft with new inspection strategy

In response to the increasing issue of mango and avocado theft, Vélez-Málaga has implemented a new inspection strategy since August, targeting major exit points of the municipality. This initiative has led to over 200 checks at crucial locations, resulting in numerous interventions and the seizure of vehicles.

Efforts to combat this problem involve collaboration between local officials, including Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez and Agriculture Councillor Jesús María Claros, police forces, and farming associations, aimed at bolstering rural security during the critical mango harvest season. The objective is to halt the theft of these significant crops and preserve the region's agricultural heritage.

Authorities have noted improved compliance with documentation among farmers, facilitating smoother enforcement. Mayor Lupiáñez remarked on the success of these collaborative efforts, indicating a notable reduction in theft incidents. Farming communities and organizations such as ASAJA and COAG have commended the timely initiation of these measures, valuing the proactive stance toward safeguarding their livelihoods.

To mitigate theft risks, farmers in the area are advised to employ secure storage solutions, install alarms, and maintain close communication with local law enforcement. Additionally, many have enhanced their property security with surveillance cameras and lighting. The community is encouraged to report any suspicious activities promptly to aid police response and improve the likelihood of recovering stolen goods.

The theft of mangoes and avocados significantly impacts Vélez-Málaga's economy, affecting not only individual farmers but also the broader agricultural sector. Through these theft prevention efforts, authorities aim to protect employment and the economic stability of the community.
