Plump table grapes have been growing and thriving in the greenhouse of Heinsberg gardener Heribert Kremers (62) since 2011. But the table grape pioneer will soon be closing his business for good. "Due to a lack of successors, table grape cultivation will come to an end at the end of this season and the greenhouses will also be dismantled," says Kremers, who supplies his yields to fruit farms and farm shops in the neighbourhood as well as marketing them directly from the farm.
Heribert Kremers dedicated a good decade to growing and selling his home-grown table grapes.
In his last year as a table grape producer, of all years, the yields were rather disappointing, Kremers continues. "Due to the wet and humid conditions, we had major problems with fungal infestation on the plants, which is why we ultimately had to accept a 50 per cent drop in yield. On the other hand, we were able to achieve consistently high prices for the grapes from the beginning of the season."
Insight into the Heinsberg greenhouse: the glasshouse facilities will soon be demolished.
Almost similar to other years, the first table grapes of the season were picked on 24 July. The season is expected to end in the first week of October, either before or directly after the German Unity Day. "After that, citrus fruits will take centre stage again," says Kremers, who produces numerous varieties. "The early varieties Vanessa and Venus run out in week 38. The two main varieties, Fanny (light-coloured) and Muscat bleu (red), on the other hand, are available from the end of August until the end of the season."
