DP World has announced the launch of a second weekly rail service linking London Gateway and Southampton, two of the UK's principal container ports. This development is part of an effort to enhance the robustness of the UK supply chain and to minimize carbon emissions by eliminating over a million truck miles each year.
The service, starting on October 1, is facilitated by Freightliner and supplements an existing weekend connection. It aims to provide customers with improved access to a range of services at the London Gateway Logistics Park, which is recognized as the UK's most expansive port-adjacent logistics park.
John Trenchard, Vice President – Commercial & Supply Chain at DP World UK, expressed that the introduction of a second rail service is a strategic step for DP World, emphasizing the importance of offering a more sustainable and efficient cargo transportation method across the country. "Modal shift has consistently proven to be a reliable and flexible solution," Trenchard remarked.
The initial rail connection, established in 2022, was aimed at enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the supply chains between these ports. Chris Lawrenson, Managing Director – Intermodal Logistics at Freightliner Group, highlighted the company's commitment to supporting DP World's expansion, noting the environmental benefits of their carbon-efficient trains and the overall effort towards modal shift.
Additionally, the initiative is supported by DP World's Modal Shift Programme, which incentivizes the movement of import-laden containers by rail to destinations within 140 miles of Southampton. This program has significantly increased the proportion of rail freight at Southampton, elevating it from 21% to over 30%.
