Anna Livingston - New Zealand Avocado

"Fortunately we have not experienced adverse weather conditions, so growers are optimistic for the current season,"

This spring New Zealand saw good growing conditions for avocados. There have been clear skies, plenty of sunshine, consistently stable temperatures, evenly distributed rainfall and minimal frosts which have been very promising this season's avocado crop.

In the last couple of years growers have faced challenges from extreme weather events such as record levels of rainfall, flooding and cyclones.

"The New Zealand export season started in July this year. Peaking between August and January 2025," explains a spokes person at New Zealand Avocado.

"New Zealand grows over 4000 hectares avocados in the Bay of Plenty and Northland. The majority if the avocados are the Hass variety."

New Zealand's largest export markets are Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand and they are looking to gain access to Vietnam. Around 50% of the avocados grown go to the domestic market.

"Fortunately we have not experience adverse weather conditions as we have done previously so growers are optimistic for the current season," concludes Anna.
