Today, 3rd of October sees the very first edition of the British Carrot Grower's National Carrot Day. It coincides with the association's Carrot Demonstration Day, where British carrot growers, seed companies and international visitors come together to about all things carrot related.
"We are very excited to have our very first National Carrot Day," said Rodger Hobson, carrot grower and Chairman of the British Carrot Grower's Association. "The carrot season started back in June and we are seeing good quality and average yields from most areas in the UK. We had a wet spring which delayed planting, but the summer was good without extreme temperatures. Things took a bit of a down turn in the last 10 days though when saw very heavy rain."
In Yorkshire where Rodger grows his carrots, they have seen 3 inches in the last couple of weeks which is above average.
"This is not a problem yet, but if we get more heavy rain it could mean trouble. Many growers are nervous that we will see a repeat of last year's extreme weather."
BCGA Carrot Demonstration Day
"Seed companies submit the best of their new varieties to one of the main growers, this year it is Strawson Ltd. in Nottinghamshire. The new varieties are grown on plots and then opened up for the Demonstration Day. It attracts growers from the UK as well as seed companies and international growers, it a great way to drive the industry forward.
