Kazakhstan introduces ban on apple imports to aid local producers

Kazakh growers are experiencing challenges in the marketplace due to high competition from imported products. Reports indicate that over the first seven months of 2024, Kazakhstan witnessed a 58% increase in apple imports compared to the same timeframe in 2023, totaling approximately 107.3 thousand tons. The surge in imports is primarily attributed to significant upticks from China and Iran, alongside steady supplies from Poland and Uzbekistan.

In response, the Interdepartmental Commission on Foreign Trade Policy and Participation in International Economic Organizations has enacted a ban on the importation of apples (HS code: 080810) via road from non-EAEU countries until December 31, 2024. This measure is designed to bolster domestic apple production and facilitate the sale of locally grown apples by limiting competition during the harvest period. The ban will not apply during the off-season, nor will it impact apple imports from EAEU member states or the international transit of apples through Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Agriculture confirms that the order is effective immediately upon its first official publication.
