Growing global interest in pomegranates: a new opportunity for Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, known for its pomegranate orchards, is capitalizing on the growing global interest in this fruit. Pomegranates, a symbol of the country and a vital component of its agriculture are becoming increasingly in demand in international markets.

In 2023, Azerbaijan produced around 190,000 tons of pomegranates, which is 20,000 tons more than in 2020. The area of orchards has also expanded from 22,000 to 25,000 hectares.

Azerbaijan's pomegranate exports are on the rise: in 2023, export volumes reached 8,579 tons, marking a 22% increase compared to 2022. The main export products are fresh fruit, pomegranate juice, and concentrate. Russia remains the largest buyer, but Azerbaijani producers are seeking to enter new markets, including Europe and the Gulf countries.

The "Made in Azerbaijan" brand is actively promoted at international exhibitions, which boosts demand. Government support and the efforts of local producers are making Azerbaijani pomegranates increasingly competitive on the global market.

Thanks to their thick skin, these pomegranates are well-suited for long storage and transportation, a significant advantage for export.
